For Immediate Release
SAN BERNARDINO, CA – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is alerting the public that construction contractors will begin a $11.6 million emergency project on State Route 38 (SR-38) to repair embankment, slopes, clear drainage and significant structural damage sustained by Tropical Storm Hilary.
Excavation repair work is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, September 5. This route will be fully closed for approximately 3-4 months to allow for repair from south of Jenks Lake Road to south of Rainbow Lane. This reopening timeline is dependent on contractor receiving proper materials and equipment for each job function, and is weather dependent. To expedite the construction, Caltrans has been able to secure regularity approval on construction needs and crew will be working 10 to 12 hours shift, 7 days a week as needed.
Caltrans is working with emergency responders to allow for safe passing at various points along the route. Again, we will continually review road opening alternatives on an on-going basis as the work progresses.
Please adhere to road closure signage to allow for safe transport of equipment and crews. At this time the roadway is fully closed for the safety of all public and crews onsite. We are working to reopen as soon as possibly with safety in mind and will review road opening alternatives on an on-going basis as work continues.
Drivers, please note Changeable Message Signs placed ahead of closure areas to alert the public about closures and roadwork ahead.
